چکیده

This paper describes the experience gained while parallelizing the global medium range weather forecasting application called TSO on a PARAM machine based on a distributed memory parallel architecture. The TSO code employs the spectral method for horizontal directions and finite differencing in the vertical direction and time marching. The parallel implementation takes care of the easy portability of parallel code across various platforms and environments. The parallel code is optimized using iS60 based assembly routines. The validation of the parallel code has been accomplished by comparing the parallel TSO results with those of the Cray for 2nd February 1993 initial data. S.C. Purohit T.V. Singh P.S. Increasing horizontal resolution in numerical weather prediction and climate simulations: illusion or panacea?

The steady path of doubling the global horizontal resolution approximately every 8 years in numerical weather prediction (NWP) at the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts may be substantially altered with emerging novel computing architectures. It coincides with the need to appropriately address and determine forecast uncertainty with increasing resolution, in particular, when con...

Numerical weather prediction and HIRLAM project

National meteorological services are required to provide short and medium range weather forecasts, warnings and alerts for their territory. Modern-day weather forecasting is highly relying on numerical weather prediction (NWP). The medium range forecasts are produced with global models using the whole of Earth as a domain having a horizontal resolution of about 20-40 km. For short range applica...

An Evaluation of Scatterometer-Derived Oceanic Surface Pressure Fields

Oceanic surface pressure fields are derived from the NASA Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) surface wind vector measurements using a two-layer similarity planetary boundary layer model in the midlatitudes and a mixed layer planetary boundary layer model in the tropics. These swath-based surface pressure fields are evaluated using the following three methods: 1) a comparison of bulk pressure gradie...

Development of an Index-based Regression Model for Soil Moisture Estimation Using MODIS Imageries by Considering Soil Texture Effects

Soil moisture content (SMC) is one of the most significant variables in drought assessment and climate change. Near-real time and accurate monitoring of this quantity by means of remote sensing (RS) is a useful strategy at regional scales. So far, various methods for the SMC estimation using a RS data have been developed. The use of spectral information based on a small range of electromagnetic...
